Benzie County Snowmobile Trail Network
Why it’s great for the first time riders…
Relax and enjoy Benzie’s 135 miles of groomed snowmobile trails. Trails are marked well with signage and maps can be obtained along the way. Benzie has two groomed trail areas for snowmobile riders. The Platte River Trail can be picked up just east of Honor. Places that can be reached on the Platte River Trail are Empire and Maple City, both in Leelanau County.
To the south, the trail crosses U.S. 31 just east of Thompsonville Rd. The Betsie River Trail begins in Beulah. Parts of the trail are the old railroad bed that is the Betsie Valley Trail for hiking and biking during other seasons. The Betsie River Snowmobile Trail goes on to Thompsonville. It also contains a sizeable loop that connects with Platte River Trail and can also take you into Manistee County south of Thompsonville where you can reach Kaleva, Bear Lake or eventually Manistee.
The Benzie trails also connect with the Cadillac trails. Below you will find links for trail maps. Trail Permits are required to ride and they can be purchased in Benzonia at Betsie Valley Sales, Backcast Fly Shop or Stapleton’s Corner Market. You can always pick up a trail map at one of the stopping points along the trails or at the Visitors Bureau. Enjoy your ride in Benzie and be safe!
Best segment(s) for a 2 hours or less hike
The Betsie Valley Trail is 22 miles long and extends from Frankfort through Elberta and Beulah to Thompsonville in Benzie County Michigan (see Trail Map for a map and Trail Tour for a description of the trail, with segment mileages). From Frankfort to Beulah it is non-motorized. All of it is excellent for bicycles and pedestrian use. The 6 miles from Frankfort to Mollineaux Rd. is asphalt and is good for roller blading. From Beulah to Thompsonville (13 miles) the compacted aggregate trail is open to snowmobiles from December through March. Pets are permitted on most parts of the Trail as long as they are on a leash and under control (see Section 4.02 of the Trail Ordinance). Pets (except leader dogs) are not permitted on the portion of the Trail between Mollineaux Road and Beulah (see Section 7.02 of the Trail Ordinance).
